Automatic Voter Registration
- My Vote My Voice supports developing and embedding an agreed system of Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) in the UK’s voting system as a matter of priority.
- AVR could ensure that those who do not have support to complete forms or are unaware of their right to vote, join the electoral register. This would have a trickle-down effect on awareness of voting rights, with the arrival of polling cards and other materials from local authorities.
- Requirements to re-register after relocating one’s address can place additional voting barriers to disabled people, particularly those with learning disabilities and autistic people. Any system of AVR should include the automatic re-registering of people when the local authority is made aware of a person moving into the area.
- Any agreed system of AVR would also include an opt-out clause for anyone to make use of at any time, of their own free will.
